A trip to the grocer has changed dramatically as of late. While only ten short years ago we rarely saw reusable bags toted in by the customer in most markets, we now blush with embarrassment on the rare occasion when we have forgotten the reusable bag at home.
Here at Locallectual, our first choice in reusable bags is always a made-in-the-USA bag of natural materials. While we have no problem finding shopping bags that fit this bill, specialty bags of this type are harder to come by.
Luckily, we’ve discovered Bamboo-bag . Designed by an artist in Berkeley and made in Oakland, California by a seamstress and her friends, Bamboo-bags are sewn from 100% retted bamboo fabric, an elegant linen-like white cloth that ages over time and many washings to a pearly cream color. Bamboo fabric is naturally bacteriostatic (it repels bacteria) so your bread and produce stay fresh longer. Bamboo-bag makes specialty bags such as produce bags and bread bags, including our favorite, the “Baguette Quiver.” Pop a couple of Bamboo-bags (they fold up to be extremely tiny) into your stash of reusable shopping bags and you will no longer need to carry your produce in a plastic bag within your reusable shopping bag. (You know that felt weird!) Don’t forget to check out Bamboo-bag for other, non-food related bags such as dressing bags and Yoga Quivers. (You can sling the strap across your chest and safely ride your bicycle to the Yoga studio, and the natural antimicrobial properties of bamboo fabric just might come in handy for encasing that sweaty yoga mat.) One day soon you may find yourself completely disposable-bag free!
