Bringin’ it Back Local at the Ballfield: New York Mets’ Citi Field

New York City is a baseball town and this is a Big Baseball Year for it with TWO brand new, suped-up stadiums unveiled this season.

The New York Mets played at Shea Stadium for 44 years. The new stadium, Citi Field, hosted its  first regular season game on April 13 with a game against the San Diego Padres.

I grew up a Yankee fan and heard many a rivalrous conversation about the Mets around my hometown. They were mostly lighthearted and considering our closest family friends were Mets fans, I feel a little kindred lovin’ for the team (though I can’t help but hear my dad’s voice calling them the “dog-a** Mets” even as I type this).

There was quite a bit of buzz about Citi Field during its construction and especially about the food.

So if we’re talkin’ who wins with their local food concession, it’s gotta be Citi Field. Evidently food provider Aramark promised to “endeavor to source sustainable food and provide eco-friendly packaging.”

Shake Shack NYC

New York restauranteur Danny Meyer used his brains for snacking and opened a Shake Shack in the ballpark. (The original Shake Shack opened in Madison Square Park and makes large efforts for greenifying, including composting waste, turning cooking oil into bio-diesel fuel and sustainable building in its Upper West Side location. And the frozen custard is made from cows’ milk  on neighboring New Jersey and Pennsylvania dairy farms! Whew!!)

There is also a stand featuring Meyer’s legendary Blue Smoke pit barbecue.

to Citi Field, with apparently two locations in the stadium. They offer antipasti and Italian subs with fresh mozzarella from Leo’s Latticini.

Dave Pasternack of New York seafood restaurant Esca operates the Catch of the Day, featuring (obviously) seafood.

And brick oven pizza from Cascarino’s in Queens.

So Go Mets! (Never thought I’d say that seriously…)
